epyc#1 – stage 1
the pre-ride beer is served at hotel am brillantengrund (bandgasse 4, 1070 wien) on sep 18, 7.30 pm!
on thursday morning sep 19 we will start at 6:30 am at the MQ.
it is a great location in the heart of Vienna and the way over Karlsplatz, Hauptbahnhof and Laxenburger Straße leads us almost straight out of the city. and, if we are in time and fast enough, before the morning rush hour!
as a second backup meeting point we offer laxenburgerstrasse 256 around 7 am
before the wiesbauer company
via laxenburg and guntramsdorf, the recommended route then follows the wiener neustädter canal for about 10k, a scenic but soemtimes narrow and tricky cycle path! take care!
after leobersdorf, wöllersdorf and after about 50k we reach bad fischau.
the next section leads us to neunkirchen and ternitz, towns whose charm does not necessarily reveal itself at first sight. lets call it a relaxing part on our way. some say boring. we think it’s the ideal preparation before the road is rising. behind the somehow nice town of gloggnitz first in a moderate way until schottwien. than a little bit more demanding through adlitzgraben and about 400 metres of ascend up to semmering passhöhe.
in times of the famous sommerfrische a very glamourous place for more or less glamorous people mainly from vienna. today former greatness is only a shadow.
on top of semmering which, with almost 1.000m above seal level is by the way the highest point we will pass on our way to the …yes… the sea!
but for the moment: lunch break!
after almost half way to graz! we recommend a quick and efficient “billa-style version directly on top of semmering.
we also recommend to wait for those who enjoy the way up to semmering a little longer.
if you need more culinary offers your next chance is a high speed descent and 13k away. in mürzzuschlag, birthplace of nobel prize winner elfriede jelinek, the chance to find something fast and hopefully good to eat is quite realistic. your decision!
from here it’s fun to ride on small roads through mürztal with possibilities of a combined coffee&cakestop either in the lovely town of kindberg or on the - at least partly picturesque - main square in bruck an der mur.
the last 50k of the day start with a small road (R2) to pernegg/mixnitz. there we change to the almost empty bundesstrasse to frohnleiten. this cosy small village above the mur is always good for a last refreshing something before we reach graz where we and our bikes are warmly received in the town hall between 6 and 7pm for a first refreshing beer etc., a kürbiscremesuppe and other small quick refuel snacks!
the evening program will be short and will be anounced later on!
epyc#1 – stage 2
graz at 7 am! chilly and the legs a are a little bit tired (see stage 1). and so are we.
we start in front of hotel weitzer, say goodbye to the almost world famous uhrturm and leave the little big town quickly. but not without a silent tribute to johann puch, the even more world famous austrian bike manufacturer icon, while passing the puch-werke (now magna) at the southern end of graz.
after fernitz we slowly fly over a small hill with now slightly warm and woken up legs.
we ignore wildon while eating a banana or a bar etc. and roll on through stocking, ragnitz and neudorf an der mur. the scenery is nice but not really breathtaking.
only some small nice little gradients in between.
passing ehrenhausen and its castle we reach spielfeld a little later. here we cross the
border to slovenija shortly after.
next stop maribor. a beautiful town. but only in the very center.
exactly there after about 70k it’s time for coffee and breakfast (number two).
leaving town again we almost pass schloss windenau (dvorec betnava) which - still charming - has seen better days.
after spodnje hoče (yes, slovenian sometimes is an orthographic and phonetic challenge) the great plain begins. and ends 30k later after having passed rače and pragersko
shortly bevor poljčane.
the following section until celje is about 40k long and really nice. not only, but also because it’s a permanent up and down on mainly small roads.
sometimes crossing the famous and original südbahn.
celje is ideal for a slice of pizza, a ćevapčići burger or whatever else you need after 140k of riding!
after a not too long break we head on. on flat terrain and through a quiet, at some points almost idyllic scenery for a little more than an hour via sveti lovrenc and tabor.
approaching the high point of the day. trojane!
600m above sea leavel and famous for their XL krofi. which means krapfen in german.
and nothing really meaningful in english.
doesn’t matter! they are huge! a must have. and a must eat.
the rest of the route to ljubljana is first downhill and than flat. only 40k to ride!
some will prefer the word still at this point!
stage 2 ends at the three bridges or triple bridge by famous slovenian architekt joze plečnik (for details ask the accompanying architects or google) and with at least one tasty slovenian beer, lots of food and the satisfying feeling, that after 430k within the last two days,
you can almost smell the sea.
only 120k missing. but not on this day!
epyc#1 – stage 3
today we have more time!
the ride is easy and comparably short! and we are more tired than yesterday!
so enjoy the morning atmosphere in ljubljana!
we do not start until 9 am on this sep 21
we leave the city via dobrova through the quiet little valley to horjul
and over a little hill to vrhnika.
if you want or need one, take a short coffee after 30k.
behind vhrnika we make about 200m of altitude on a not so quiet road. after a sharp turn to the left in the middle of logatec enjoy the next 20k up and through the forest of rakek to lace and to planina. including a few nice little slopes upward to postojna.
according to the author one of the best parts of the whole ride!
in postojna we are not so interested in the famous caves there
but more in a nice little snack in the sun.
the last 60k are waiting. with nice views and an accompanying autobahn (on the first 10k)
then down to senozeče and further down to štorje.
via šepulje (with a hidden but really fine and cosy restaurant)
and dutovlje we are leaving slovenia. and enter italy via a little ascent!
from here all roads are leading to trieste. and then rome!
we selected not the steepest, not the shortest but simply the best! with the nicest sounding
places along the now very short way. borgo grotta gigante and prosecco!
from there you willl have the first and spectacular view on trieste.
after a number of selfies and selfgroupies (if this word exists) just focus once more to descend safely on the picturesque strada del friuli.
maybe with a little stop at the impressing old faro!
and a final little zig zag through the streets of trieste to molo audace!
the official finish of epyc#1!
the rest is silence!
